Country overview: Spanish market to grow by 16,000 hotel rooms [Infographic]

According to the TOPHOTELPROJECTS database, Spain’s hotel market is slated to grow by 81 projects in the next few years.

In the coming years, Spain’s hotel market will see healthy growth with 81 projects and 16,123 rooms currently in the pipeline.

We find out more where the popular holiday destination will see new hotels opening and which ones to keep an eye on.

Solid growth in the coming years

2020 will be a strong year for Spain’s hotel market. 33 new properties will open this year, adding 5,120 rooms. Another 22 hotels with 4,012 rooms are planned for 2021.

2022 looks quieter with only 5 openings scheduled so far. Things will pick up again from 2023 with 21 hotels signed off already.

The four-star segment will grow fastest with 45 openings while the 5-star segment will get 36 new properties.

Madrid will get by far the highest number of new hotels with 15 properties getting ready to open and add 2,705 rooms to the capital’s market.

Barcelona follows with 9 properties and 2,025 rooms while Benidorm and Marbella will both get 4 new hotels. Málaga completes the list with 3 projects in the pipeline.

Top 3 hotel brands expanding in Spain

Paradores Hoteles will open 5 new hotels in the near future. Hard Rock Hotels & Casinos is getting ambitious in Spain and will launch 3 new hotels with the highest number of new rooms (1,263). Curio – A Collection by Hilton will also open 3 properties but given their boutique nature, the total room count will only add up to 332 rooms.

Noteworthy hotel projects in Spain

The 600-room Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tarragona is one of the largest properties in Spain’s hotel pipeline. Its launch is planned for Q1 2023 and the property will include a luxury shopping destination on top of accommodation and casino offerings. This guitar-shaped Hard Rock Hotel will be a focal point of the Hard Rock Entertainment World.

Set on a beach front site in Estepona, close to Marbella and a 60-minute drive from Malaga Airport, the 411-room Ikos Andalusia – Costa del Sol Princess Resort will provide luxury rooms and suites on 70,000 m2 of landscaped gardens and leisure facilities alongside 14,000m2 of beach front from May 2020. In addition, the hotel will house eight restaurants, sports and theatre facilities, a spa, indoor and outdoor heated pools plus an Ikos Deluxe accommodation area.

A completely new format is taking shape in Castilblanco. By 2023, Elysium City will be the first major smart sustainable city project in Europe planned and built from scratch and following the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The Elysium City Iconic Casino Hotel will be within this development which is planned on a site once considered for Euro Disney. It will be home to several attractions, including a theme park, water park, several hotels, an 18-hole signature golf course, a marina, and a residential district.

The 200-room Four Seasons Madrid Canalejas will be housed in a series of heritage buildings making up the Canalejas complex, adjacent to the Puerta del Sol and an easy walk from Madrid’s major landmarks and city centre. Following careful repairs, restoration and renovations, the hotel will be a centre form social gatherings and business meetings for local and international visitors alike from mid-2020.
